Max had wanted the other survivors of his crew to see a familiar face as soon as they came too. And felt the truth of what had happened to them needed to be conveyed immediately. And it was his responsibility to do it. So he had been sat close to the two Vulcans biobeds since he had left the Captain.
Syvar approached and rested a gloves hand on the man's shoulder in an offer of comfort. "They should be waking shortly sir," he said softly as he walked around to examine both Vulcans. "Maybe you should talk to them, I assume you know them well?"
“A little. This is our CMO,” he indicated the female. “Before this happened I had my medical and she told me I needed to get leaner,”
It didn’t feel like a priority now. There was too much else to think about. “Do you think it will be easier for them. Your race live longer. They may still have family left at least.”
"They can find out if they wish to," Syvar answered, "as for her conclusion she is correct but that is a concern for later. Your priority now is to get yourself settled in this time and caught up on events. And be here for your surviving crew." He nodded towards the woman, who was stirring. "I will leave you to it but if you need me I'll be in the office. Just call and I'll be right here."
As he walked away, T'Chiara drew in a deep breath then opened her eyes. They widened as they took on the unfamiliar surroundings, then finally settled on the XO. "Commander...what happened? Where are we?" She sat up, studying him. "Are you injured?" This was clearly a medical facility even if the equipment was unfamiliar.
“I’m fine physically,’ he said. “How do you feel?”
"Confused," Kia answered, glancing sideways to the other bed where her betrothed was still not moving. "What happened?"
“There is no easy way to tell you this doctor. I don’t know how much you remember but we got sucked into a portal and erm …… it spat us out 97 years in the future in the middle of a battle. This is a federation vessel that rescued us,” Max told her. He let that sink in.
"Are we the only survivors?" Her expression changed to one of concern. "Sakara? Is she alright?" Since S'Kai was here that was one less concern, but her long time friend
..where was she?
Max swallowed trying to hold back his own grief. “I’m sorry doctor.” He took a deep breath trying not to let his emotions overtake him. “The captain …… she didn’t make it.
We don’t know how many survivors yet,” he added sadly.
The young woman's face fell, her eyes darkening with unchecked grief. The wave of emotion seemed to stir the young man beside her and he unsteadily got up to join her. While his expression didn't change, the gesture of taking the grieving former chief medical officer in his arms spoke volumes. "I grieve with thee," he said softly before looking at the XO. "And thee," he added, giving the man a brief nod in acknowledgement. "If permitted, I will look after her."
Max nodded, “Did you hear everything?”
Did he have to say the words again? If more survivors he would. He might have to utter these words many times.
S'Kai shook his head. "No, but that can wait. For now, we should get cleared so we can familiarise ourselves with our new situation."
“Doctor,” Max said. “They are awake.”
Syvar hadn't been far off but had given Max the time he needed with his old crew mates. He approached cautiously, giving the pair time to adjust to his presence. "You can get yourself acquaintanced with this time when you feel steady enough to walk out on your own, all three of you," he told them. "Physically you are fine, mentally that's up to the counselor. Adjusting will take time and you need to allow yourself the time. Perhaps investigate whether you still have family or descendants of your family."
The Vulcan doctor paused, hoping to be reassuring though he felt out of his depth here. "I'll leave you to your thoughts but if you need me don't hesitate to call."
“I don’t know about you two but I’m not ready to look up relatives,” Max said honestly. “If we walk out that door there’s so many changes we would need a guide. Doctor can we have a tour? Maybe that would be a start while they keep looking for other survivors?”
Syvar cast them a look of sympathy. "You can have a tour, if course. But be careful you don't overwhelm yourself with all the new technology, take it easy."
"Can you give us that tour?" Max asked.
"After my shift," the young doctor answered with a nod, "for now I suggest you get some more rest as there'll be plenty of new impressions to exhaust yourself with later."
Max begrudging nodded but he really didn’t want to rest. “I suppose we wait to see if any further survivors,” he looked at the two Vulcans from his time.
"No... you wait until after my shift," the doctor corrected him gently. "Go and explore the ship, and your assigned quarters and I will come for you after my shift."
Max looked on confused as the doctor had said get some rest then in his next breathe was telling them to go explore’ “Si doctor,” he said not wishing to argue.
“Come on,” he said to other two, “Let’s look around.’
The Vulcan couple nodded quietly as they rose from their respective beds. "We will change into a proper uniform, then join you," T'Chiara stated calmly. Within a few minutes the two Vulcans were dressed and followed Max out.
