1,106 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Prologue: Joy is in the journey
Location: Transporter Room

ON

The day was wearing on and so far there had been little to no positive news coming from Engineering or from Commander Vero about either of the little problems this ship had encountered thus far. Her plan had been to stop by her quarters and begin to organise her belongings, in a futile attempt to keep busy while she waited for news but those plans, as always while working on a Starship now decided to take something of a left turn.

"Bridge to Captain Sakara, come in please"

Her eyes caught the nearest comm panel which she approached and thumbed the white button to activate it before speaking into the grated microphone situated as a rectangular node within a red panel. "Go ahead bridge"

"You are required in the transporter room with Commander Vero"

"Acknowledged bridge. Please signal the Commander Vero also".

"Aye sir. Bridge out"

Moving away from the comm panel she took the next turning to a dead end corridor with nothing in it but a set of vibrate red doors at the end. She could already hear the familiar hum of the turbolift heading her way and when the doors parted she found Commander Vero already inside. She moved with purpose to take one of the handles before the doors closed and the turbolift continued its journey.

"I believe our summons to the transporter room are to greet our Helmsman. Given he has been travelling from Earth I see no challenges for allowing him on board as he should have no knowledge of the events in Engineering!"

No pleasantries to punctuate the beginning of the conversation, just pure logical assumption that as they had greeted each other earlier in the day there would be no need to do so again.

Max nodded in agreement. "I concur Captain." The doors opened and he waited for her to exit then followed her towards the transporter room.

Transporter Room

Wayne materialized on the Oberth's transporter pad. He looked around, not seeing any command officer for him to report to. He looked at the person operating the transporter. "I'm Ensign Robert Wayne, helmsman, reporting for duty."

"The Captain and XO are just .... ooo have," the female transporter chief stood to attention as they both walked in. "Arrived."

"Ensign... Forgive our tardiness" Sakara started as soon as she had entered the transporter room. "I trust your transfer orders have been transmitted or you have them on your person?"

Wayne snapped to attention when the captain and the Exec walked in. "They should have been transmitted, ma'am, but I have a copy with me." Hands her the data disk.

The new nurse, Ensign Sarah Clemens also arrived and stood behind Wayne.

Wayne and Clemens met on the transport ship and had long conversations.

Max side stepped a little to be able to see both people. "Welcome aboard," he said, his voice thick with his Italian accent. "I trust it was a smooth trip over?" he made a mental note he had yet to go for his physical so had better schedule that.

"I think I can speak for my traveling companion and say that we did indeed have a pleasant trip, commander." Wayne bowed his head slightly.

"That's nice," the XO said. He turned to the transporter chief, "Do you have room allocations/Shift data etc all sorted?"

"Yes sir, let me just sort that," she nodded.

"Ensign, welcome. I believe Doctor T'Chiara has been expecting you. Chief, would you please escort the Nurse to her quarters" The Captain addressed the slender women before turning her attention back to the Helmsman.

Clemens stepped forward. "Thank you, commander. I've been looking forward to this assignment since I heard I got it." She waited for the Transporter Chief.

"Your quarters are assigned as Room C23 on Deck 2. You have one room mate, as luck would have it "me!" she smiled at her. "Please follow me and we get you settled," she nodded her head at a colleague to take over her post and headed out the door.

"Ensign, my apologies but the Commander and I need to apprise you of a situation that has arisen on board that requires complete discretion, hence the need to discuss in a private location" she took a further step forward, already feeling the Commander keeping step behind her. "We have suffered a loss on board that could indicate a homicide. To that end yourself and Ensign Clemens are the final officers to be accepted on board while this situation is investigated. All senior officers are being apprised of this in the wake of our launch and the ships status as an experimental test bed with a number of new technologies that the Romulans and Klingons would see as rather valuable commodities to acquire".

Wayne took the news and felt shocked by it. A homicide aboard a star ship has never happened, according to computer records he's looked at. "I understand, captain. Be assured that I will help in any way possible."

"You can get their belongings moved to their rooms si? he asked the replacement transporter room staff.

He nodded.

"In that case if the captain is in agreement and you have no imminent desire to go to your quarters we can head back to the bridge?"

"Indeed. We have a number of system analysis and testing to complete before we launch" Sakara added. "But we will not prevent you from resting Ensign should you feel it is needed after your journey".

Wayne looked at the captain. "The old saying goes, I'll rest when I'm dead." Wayne grinned. "I'm eager to get to work, captain."

"Understood... Commander Vero will oversee crew assignments. I am confident he will have need of you to aid in preparing the vessel for launch".

"Si, there is still plenty to get stowed away in the correct areas. I am sure like with the rest of the crew you are not adverse to how the humans say, "Mucking in"? Max said. Even though he was half human and spent much of his life on Earth sometimes some of the phrases amused him.

Clemens looked at the commander. "I suspect that when it gets crazy in sickbay, that I will be "mucking" through the injured and blood soon enough, commander."

"Very well" Sakara interjected. "I will not keep you from your duties. Commander I trust you will see them to their quarters and respective duties?"
Sakara nodded to the new arrival before turning and exiting the room. She had more to do than she cared to admit and time was running short.
